Several years ago I was creating paintings and installations and slowly started to make process the main aspect of my work. This came from the idea of slowing things down as a reaction to society’s obsession with speed. I was reading the works of Paul Virilio back then and they had a great influence on me. As years passed and my art evolved I started working with pencil on paper and have gained great respect for the simplicity of working with basic materials, especially since I feel that the labor intensive aspect of my art gives respect to those materials. Each piece depending on size takes several weeks or months to complete due to the intense detail within each work. This new set of drawings represent a shift in my practice, I have started drawing monochromatic pieces with the expansive night sky, which is made up of compressed cityscapes full of buildings and skyscrapers. I juxtapose these with the landscape to represent the struggle between nature, development and the human footprint upon the terrain. The scenarios within the work come about abstractly very similar to writing things down while letting ones own thoughts flow, this keeps my mind in a state similar to meditation while the drawing evolves. I hope the viewer is able to always find something new and intriguing within the work no matter how familiar they become with it.
