David Martin

David Martin first came to NIAD Art Center in 1999 when he was 56 years old. He had expressed a long-term interest in painting and drawing. Once he was established at NIAD, he exhibited a really unusual talent for representational drawing. Particularly of the human figure and portraits.

He has exhibited at a number of art exhibitions including the Florence Ludins Katz Gallery. Martin's work is characterized by a powerful sense of both line and color. His representational drawings and paintings are often of children in dire straits, with huge eyes and compassionate mournful expressions on their faces. There is nothing kitschy or maudlin rather powerful emotions that are echoed by his strong palette. One easily thinks of German expressionists.
