NEW WORK BY RICHARD BASSETT
Max (2011) / Needlepoint pillow (wool, linen, down) / 15ʼʼ x 15ʼʼ x 4ʼʼ
Reception for the ArtistsSaturday, February 9th, 3 to 5 P.M.
Richard Bassettʼs handmade needlepoint pillows maneuver a tension between difficult, but familiar, photographic images, and the soft faces of objects that are more often associated with domestic kitsch. His first two series of pillows, Dallas and Comfort Level displayed scenes of violent crimes. Dallas drew on documentation from the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and in Comfort Level, Bassett rendered images taken from security cameras during convenience store robberies.
Bassettʼs most recent series is of cats and dogs, more common subjects for pillows. However, whereas a typical scene might depict a happy, anthropomorphized pet, the pillows in Options show the sad breakdown of that fantasy: animals who have been abused or abandoned and are now in the pound. In our culture, animals are bred for the purpose of serving human needs. Domesticated cats and dogs are dealt the difficult task of providing comfort and company, making them utterly vulnerable to human whim. This becomes especially clear when these animals end up in shelters.
Bassett has commented that for him these new pillows are about, “a total lack of control, self-determination, and choice in oneʼs life,” his subjects are “at the total mercy of someone else.” The expression on the faces of these animals is one of plaintive desperation, and the bars that obscure their images are a poignant reminder of the arbitrary yet significant barriers and obstacles that can beset all lives, animal and human alike.
Options will open on Thursday, February 7th and a reception will be held for the artist on Saturday February 9th from 3:00 to 5:00. The show will run through March 9th. For more information or for images, contact the gallery, details below.
COLOR & FORM
NEW WORK BY WILLIE HARRIS, MARLON MULLEN, AND JONATHAN VELASQUEZ
Reception for the ArtistsSaturday, January 5th, 3 to 5 P.M.
Jack Fischer Gallery is pleased to announce a group show by 3 artists, Willie Harris, Marlon Mullen, and Jonathan Velasquez. These artists create colorful and engaging abstractions that are connected through visceral and formal qualities. The paintings by Harris and Mullen play rhythmically with Velasquez’s sculptural spires.
To categorize these two painters as painters working only in the context of abstract expressionism is limiting, the sheer joy of painting for paintings sake is a connection these two share.
For more information about the artists, please visit NIADART.ORG
Pictured above, Untitled by Wille Harris 24" x 24.5", acrylic on two canvas panels, 2011
"After sitting down to work Harris arranges his paint jars in a row and puts a brush inside each container. One to five paintings lay flat on the table with their edges butted up against one another in front of the paint. Once everything’s in place, Harris will then select a jar of paint, grab the brush and quickly apply the paint in short slashing strokes for several seconds. Then he’ll swap paint jars and repeat the same process throughout the day, while moving across the canvases. This process can go on for days on one single piece or a group of paintings. The surface slowly builds and paint often binds the canvasses together. Occasionally Harris will rearrange the paintings by plopping one on top of another."
Pictured above, Burgoyne Diller by Marlon Mullen, 34" x 24.5", acrylic on panel, 2012
"Marlon Mullen has been described as a 'painters painter' Mullen is completely fearless about paint and color. His subject regardless of the form is ultimately the colors and the brush strokes that become an integral part of the design/form. His paintings are both spacious and spare, with a palette that is broad over his body of work but within the confines of each painting. Watching Mullen work is a treat, as he seems to enjoy what appears to be a dance as he mixes the colors and brushes the paint."
Pictured above, JV 1 by Jonathan Velasquez, cardboard and staples, 2012
Jonathan Velasquez creates spires from rotating and manipulating sheets of cardboard. Relying on the essence of this humble material, Velasquez uses staples as the only binder in the form. This will be Velasquez’s first time showing with the gallery.
FABRICATORS
Reception for the ArtistsSaturday, December 15th - 3 to 5 P.M.
Fabricators is the culmination of a collaboration between five Creativity Explored artists and students in the Fabricators ENGAGE at CCA (California College of the Arts) class, taught by art critic, writer, curator, and educator Glen Helfand.
Working with CE artists Camille Holvoet, Christina Marie Fong, Lance Rivers, Natalie Spring, and Thanh My Diep, and with assistance from IDEO, student teams “fabricated” new pieces inspired by these artists’ work. The resultant objects not only represent the partnerships these groups formed, but also serve to advance the vision of these five Creativity Explored artists.

THIS FALL AT JACK FISCHER GALLERY : fishman / waterfall
Photography by Ken Morisawa
Jack Fischer Gallery would like to announce the opening of a show featuring the work of Japanese photographer, Ken Morisawa.
Based out of Tokyo and armed with a Nikon NIKONOS-V, Morisawa captures idiosyncratic moments beneath the surface of water. His subject is often water itself. Seeking to demonstrate the beauty and flamboyance of its movements, Morisawa turns to novel means of capture.
fishman / waterfall will consist of two series produced between 2003 and 2009. In Fishman, Morisawa photographed swimmers passing through the water above him. These images show bodies completely engulfed by water, the former powerfully pushing against the latter, which acquiesces, but not without turbulence.
The second series again sees Morisawa photographing water in a surprising (and some might even say dangerous) manner. In this case he stood beneath a waterfall, and caught images of the surging current as it splintered into millions of droplets and bubbles.
It is obvious from looking at his work that Morisawa is a man who is intimately familiar with the enigma and power of water. Aside from his photography, Morisawa’s involvement with this element extends to free diving and fishing.
fishman / waterfall will open on Saturday October 15th with a reception for the artist from 3:00 to 5:00. It will extend until November 19th. For more details on the show or the artist, please refer to the contact information below.

SHOW DETAILS
Jack Fischer Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a solo show by Los Angeles based painter, Scott Yeskel. A rich marriage of abstraction and the representational, Yeskel’s work always springs from the same source: the urban landscape of Southern California and its sprawling outskirts of mountains, freeways and airports.
The sights are familiar to most Californians: taco trucks, Airstream trailers, and old Volvos parked outside Spanish tiled condos with requisite palm trees. In part, these represent the sheer ubiquity of cars and other vehicles in that vast, dry terrain, so often traversed on four wheels. Sometimes Yeskel depicts the difficulties of this peripatetic lifestyle with paintings of traffic jams, car crashes, and a thick, hazy smog that his palette captures faultlessly. But there is also a hint of romanticism there. This is especially true of the abstracts, which possess a real sense of grace and rationality. Their titles betray, however, that they are of the same provenance: Bridge View, Presidio, Desert Highway.
Scott Yeskel possesses a B.F.A from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. This will be his second solo show at the Jack Fischer Gallery.
The show will open on the 7th of July, with an opening reception for the artist on Saturday the 9th from 3:00 to 5:00. Mapping California will remain on view until August 20th.

SHOW DETAILS
The Jack Fischer Gallery would like to announce the opening of a show held in cooperation with Creative Growth, Creativity Explored, and the National Institute of Art and Disabilities (NIAD); three local nonprofit centers dedicated to the support of developmentally and physically disabled adult artists. Proceeds from the show will go back to the centers, allowing them to continue providing quality instruction, art supplies, and opportunities for exhibition to their artists. In the case of all three centers, the individuals who use their studio and gallery facilities represent a diversity of backgrounds, ages, and styles of expression.
Jack Fischer has a long history of working with these centers and their artists, such as Camille Holvoet, Aurie Ramirez, Rosita Pardo, and Thomas Pringle. This show will be themed around portraiture, and will exhibit responses to the human face in a variety of mediums.
The show will open on May 14th with a reception for the artists at the gallery from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and be on display until June 25th.
The Jack Fischer gallery is located at 49 Geary Street, suite 418, San Francisco, CA. It is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00 a.m to 5:30 p.m, as well as by appointment. For more information contact Jack Fischer at (415) 956-1178, or at info@jackfischergallery.com
